A Beginners Guide to TikTok Ads

Are you using all platforms to advertise? Even TikTok? Never thought about it? It’s time to read this beginner's guide about how to take advantage of TikTok, with an overview of TikTok ads and the important process of establishing your ads campaigns.

Why use TikTok for advertising?

You might question how TikTok can actually help your business reach your audience, increase your brand popularity, and even your sales. It has been found that “30% of TikTok users” find their products through ads in their feed, it also shows that consumers “spend 14% more when TikTok is part of their customer journey.” These are just a few examples of why you should spend some money on TikTok ads.

Costs

Of course, the costs for ads will be different for every business. This depends on your overall goal for the campaign. Secondly, it’ll depend on how long you want to run the ads and how widely you want to target them. It’s important to note that when setting ads you should bare your budget in mind. There is a minimum monthly budget spend of 500 dollars to run your TikTok ads.

What is the TikTok ads manager?

TikTok ads manager is where you can easily create ads for your TikTok account. But before you can do this you need to set up a TikTok ads account. Once you’ve done this you can log in with your details and start making TikTok ads.

Step-by-step guide on how to set up your TikTok ads

To help you through the process, follow this simple guide and get started.

Create your campaign

Firstly you need to set up a campaign, to do this you need to go to the TikTok ads platform, click “Campaign”, and then “Create”. Here you’ll need to select your objectives, campaign name, and budget, then create your ad group.

Choosing your campaign objectives

After taking the first step in creating your campaign, you need to define your ad objectives. Your objectives will depend on the goal you are looking to achieve with your ads campaign. It’s important to keep your campaign goal broad and ensure it includes what you want to achieve in the long term.

What to focus on when setting your overall campaign goal:

  • Do you want to raise your brand's awareness?
  • Would you like more people to engage with your videos?
  • Would you like to drive more people to your website?

From asking yourself these questions you’ll be able to understand what you want to achieve from your ad and your long-term goals for the business.

Ad Groups

After you have created your ad campaign, you need to create multiple ad groups. Using ad groups is a helpful way in structuring your different ads. This will also allow you to compare and analyse the performance of your ads.

Ad Placements

Ad placement is basically where you want your ads to show up when advertising. When doing this you can set them yourself or choose the automatic option, which will optimise your ad display to reach as many people as possible.

Areas you can choose

TikTok placement: Your ad will be shown within the TikTok app, in the For You Feed area.

News Feed app placement:Your ad will be displayed within TikTok, BuzzVideo, TopBuzz, NewsRepublic, or Babe.

Pangle placement:Your ad will be shown “in the ad network of TikTok for business.”

Determine your budget and schedule

Although you’ve chosen what budget your campaign will have as a whole, you then have to decide how much of this then goes into each ad group. The minimum spend is 20 dollars daily.

After setting this, it’s time to schedule your ad group, this involves setting a start and end date, or choosing if you want the ads to run continuously.

Select your optimising goal and bidding strategy

The options you can choose for your optimisation goal are: ‘Conversation’, ‘Clicks’, or ‘Reach’. This decision will be based on your ad goals.

Example: Conversation - If you want people to go to your website.

Depending on the goal you choose, TikTok will select and set your billing events. For example: If ‘Clicks’ is chosen as your optimisation goal, you will be billed based on (CPC) cost per clicks.

It’s time to set up your TikTok ads

After you have completed the previous steps, you now need to create your TikTok ad. This is the time to define what content you want in your ad, this is usually your images or videos, with a caption and a call to action (“Shop Now,” “Contact Us,” or “Learn More”).

You can then upload the visuals, set a cover photo, and preview your ad. Once you’ve done this, your ad is ready to go.

Are Blogs Dying Out in 2023?

There has been a noticeable rise in the interaction of video and podcasting, making many believe that blogging is dying out as a worthwhile marketing channel.

Some studies show that video content is 100% more effective than images and text communication. Furthermore, consumers are likely to “remember 95% of a message when watching a video”. This highlights the large impact videos are making on consumers and how you should be integrating them into your marketing strategy.

However, having said this, blogs continue to help with more than just informing your consumers. They are a highly valuable resource as they help with brand awareness and SEO. From recent studies, HubSpot found “that 60% of people read a blog at least once a week”. So make sure you keep them in your marketing strategy.

Blogs have been found to be a long-term investment, due to many people finding blogs to help with lead generation after a period of time.

Ross Simmonds, a business-to-business marketing expert and founder of the content marketing agency Foundation, commented on how blogs have benefitted his clients by “tripling their traffic and accelerating their sales close rates”. Ross goes on further to speak about how blogs have supported his clients in unlocking new opportunities in the industry.

However, Lisa Toner, the director of HubSpot, has recently spoken about how it isn’t enough to just blog nowadays. Lisa mentioned that you need to be keeping your content fresh and updated with trends. In turn, you’ll be able to keep up to the same level as your competitors and potentially become more valuable than them.

Therefore, blogs are found to be beneficial when included in your marketing strategy, this will help your company in the long term. However, this doesn’t mean you can forget about the other elements of a successful marketing strategy.

Is TikTok Becoming a New Search Engine?

From needing to find a place to eat or a fun activity in a city to finding out how to do something like cook or change a lightbulb, TikTok is becoming the new place to search for the answers. And Google has definitely noticed.

Although TikTok has been known for its dancing videos and a place for music, it is increasingly being used as a search engine for Generation Z as well. Could this be due to videos being easier to learn from?

TikTok creates an algorithm that personalises content that is shown to the user. This all depends on what the users have been interacting with and searching previously.

Nailah Roberts, 25, uses TikTok to find places to eat in Los Angeles, where she lives. She found searching for restaurants on Google difficult due to the reviews not being able to fully sell the restaurant. But on TikTok, the videos of the setting and food help show the style and ambiance of the restaurant a lot clearer.

It has been found that many people have been using other social media platforms and apps to search for products and trends, not just TikTok. Instagram is used to keep up to date on trends, Amazon is used to search for products and Snapchat has even been used to find local businesses. Therefore, the digital world is expanding with what is included as well as how consumers are using the platforms.

While TikTok has joined the search engine group and other social media platforms and apps have alternative uses, Google is still the world's dominant search engine.

In turn, TikTok is known for its engaging content, keeping the younger generations more interested and drawn in for a longer period of time. Google has tried to keep up with this and incorporated pictures and videos into their search, in recent years, as well as introducing YouTube Shorts, in 2020. However, is it too late for Google? We will just have to wait and see.

The Top Social Media Trends For 2023

Social media is always changing, and the new year is no exception. After multiple changes last year where authenticity became super popular, will 2023 see the rise of more relatability? This blog will give you a list of the top social media trends that you could use this year!

Instagram’s Creator Benefits

Whilst Instagram might be seen as a slightly inferior platform it still has over 1 billion active users each month. 2023 should see Instagram give creators more specific and exclusive features, as they have throughout 2022 keep your eyes peeled to see when the next ones come out. These features usually get a boost in Insta’s algorithm too, so it’s worth jumping on these trends!

Mid-way Storytelling

A massive trend towards the end of 2022 was using social media to tell a story. However, in 2023 we think telling a story from part-way through will be the new trend to captivate your audience and make them want to catch up with what you’ve been up to. This trend can be used across a range of platforms and doesn’t have to be solely video, why not try it on the TikTok photos trend?

Gated Content

In 2023 gated content is expected to become more popular for a variety of reasons. Firstly gated content means you can connect more deeply with your audience, and this content can be owned by yourself along with the social platforms. It’s also a great way to monetise your work and stop your follower’s feeds from being plagued with ‘suggested content’ before seeing your work!

SEO

The power of SEO keywords and phrases should never be underestimated, especially in the social media space where just under 50% of Generation Z use Instagram and TikTok to search rather than Google. So, in 2023 to get your content discovered by as many people as possible you should use SEO keywords in your content.

LinkedIn

Although LinkedIn is an older and traditionally less popular and more formal platform, it is perfect for organic engagement and that’s why more creators will take on LinkedIn in 2023. It’s great to show personality, and show your expertise, knowledge and achievements.

Artificial Intelligence

You might have already noticed but this year, AI is everywhere and has become really accessible. Did you know that TikTok has a selection of effects that have been inspired by AI? For example, you can create a background through your text, we’ll definitely be seeing much more of this throughout the year.

Youtube Shorts

Did you know that Youtube Shorts can get up to 30 billion views every day? These short videos will help you gain more viewers that can also watch your longer-form content and grow your channel. In 2023 they’ll also be more monetisation for Youtube Shorts so it’s worth having a go.

User-generated Content

Particularly with brands, user-generated content is becoming increasingly popular, and this type of content can be made in-house. This content is made well and will impact people’s purchasing choices, are you going to give it a go?

Less Trend Copying

Throughout 2022, copying trends was definitely a top strategy, but in 2023 it’s going to take a backseat. To grow and stand out from the crowd in 2023, originality will be key. So whilst it’s tempting to jump on every single new trending audio, make sure you’re putting out your own ideas too so you stand out, storytelling is already becoming popular.

Have any of these trends surprised you? Which ones are you going to try out first? We can’t wait to see how social media evolves throughout 2023, just watch this space.

For companies, this is your chance to make some sales. Use this day for discounts or putting on a special event for mothers. On your social media, wish everyone a happy mother’s day and ask your employees to share their appreciation for a special woman in their life.

However, something that has come to our attention is being able to opt out of email content. Not everyone will want to celebrate mother’s day, so give them the option to skip the mother’s day emails. This will show your understanding, and keep ALL your customers happy.

What’s New In Social Media - April 2023

Calling all social media enthusiasts! It's April, we’ve made it through the first quarter of the year and we’ve got some exciting social media news to share with you. In this blog, we'll be discussing the latest updates from your favourite social media platforms. So, sit back, relax and we’ll get started!

Twitter’s Code and Inc

First up, we have some big news from Twitter. At the end of last month, Twitter published its algorithm recommendation code. This means brands will get more transparency regarding how their content ranks on the platform. This exciting development is sure to give brands a better understanding of how Twitter's algorithm works and how they can improve their content to gain more visibility.

But that's not all! Twitter has enrolled in a different venture called X Corp. That's right – Twitter Inc. no longer exists. X Corp is a privately held corporation based in San Francisco, California.

Instagram DMs

Moving on to Instagram, the platform has released some useful tips for brands on how to use DMs to build personal relationships with customers and grow their business with Instagram messaging. Instagram has given out practical tips on their DM connection process via their new info page, along with a range of case studies too that might spark inspiration. If you're looking to maximise your Instagram presence, make sure you check out Instagram's guide on using DMs.

LinkedIn Feeds

Next up, LinkedIn has announced their product updates, ones that will be noticeable in our feeds. They want to show LinkedIn users more topics and posts that are relevant to them. Some of the updates include the ability to build your feed around what matters to you, so you’re suggested topics that are actually relevant to you! This also means that suggested posts should be more beneficial too, not something random that you aren’t interested in. It’s obvious that LinkedIn wants to boost its users’ experience. Keep an eye out on your feed!

TikTok’s Focus On Communities

If you're looking to tap into the power of communities on social media, then TikTok has some tips for you. In a recent post, they recommended that brands take on a 3-step approach to utilise the power of communities. The first was to, find your communities using their Keyword Insights Tool, the second to develop your content strategy, and finally, create content that resonates with your target audience. They truly believe that embracing communities and their subcultures is where true inspiration lives. It’s key to be creative and think outside the box!

Meta’s Ad Tips

Last but not least, Meta (aka Facebook) has introduced two new video series for brands to help improve their ROI from Meta ads. The first video series, 'Performance Talks', features marketing experts from Meta and beyond discussing the latest insights around ads and the digital marketing world. The second, 'Ask an Expert', focuses on giving the community guidance on questions they have asked themselves on popular topics around Meta ads. This is not one to miss if you want to improve your ad campaigns on social media!

That's all for today! We hope you’ve found these updates informative and useful. Social media is constantly evolving, and it's important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and developments. Be sure to follow us for more updates on social media news and trends!

What’s New In Social Media - February 2023

The year is flying by and we’re almost in March! 2022 had many interesting social media updates and 2023 is no different. From new TikTok insights to a new Instagram feature, this blog will talk about all things new and exciting in social media this February so you know what to expect!

TweetDeck Exclusivity

It looks like TweetDeck will eventually become an exclusive feature for Twitter Blue users, so you’ll only have access to the management app if you’re a paying user. This would make Twitter Blue a more appealing option for many social media users, would you want to subscribe to it? With Twitter Blue currently having only 300,000 subscribers, Twitter will be looking to really sell the service and its benefits over the coming months, starting with its TweetDeck Exclusivity.

TikTok’s Data Insights

This month, TikTok has added an impressive 70,000 insights to its TikTok insights tool; this app can be used to find trends and what’s popular with users. This tool was created in May and features a range of stats, so you might need to filter it to find what you’re specifically looking for but it can your understanding of the platform and ensure you’re staying relevant to your audience.

Instagram Memories

Instagram has got a new feature to encourage users to share their old posts, through a section called ‘Memory’. Have you seen this pop up on your feed? It’s basically Instagram’s archive but is now in a more convenient place to prompt you to use it. You’ll be able to find stories that you’ve posted previously and you’ll have the option to reshare them with your followers. Will you be using this feature?

Snapchat Hits 750 Million Users

During Snapchat’s 2023 Investor Day, they announced that they have now hit 750 million monthly active users, how impressive! They previously announced they had hit 600 million last April, what a big jump! The platform still continues to grow across the globe, and we wonder what new features they’ll introduce in the future, they certainly have room to do, especially with their latest AR tools.

TikTok’s In-Stream Shopping Tests

TikTok is carrying on trying to push in-stream shopping, having launched a purchasing initiative with some retailers. Some US retailers have an in-stream shopping section on their profiles, which consists of an overview and a direct purchase section. This all happens as part of the app, as opposed to a website that only retailers use. Have you noticed any retailers with this feature? We wonder when this will be rolled out to UK retailers. Keep your eyes peeled!

That’s all the updates for February! Which ones surprised you the most? For more social media information like this, visit our blog page today!

What’s New In Social Media - March 2023

A quarter of the year is almost over! How quickly has it flown by? Like every month, there’s been an abundance of social media updates and news, from changes with Twitter’s two-factor authentication to TikTok allowing you to refresh your algorithm, there is certainly a lot going on in the social media space! This blog as always will give you a list of what’s happening in social media right now!

Instagram’s Top 3 Stories Sticker

Instagram is definitely on the lookout for more engagement as social platforms are getting more and more competitive every day. They’re currently testing a Top 3 sticker for stories that will allow users to choose their three favourites, from accounts to places, the options are endless. Have you seen this pop up on your feed yet? It’ll be interesting to see if this trend takes off, or if it’ll become a feature that is rarely used.

Twitter Blue’s Two-factor Authentication Exclusivity

Twitter has recently added another perk to its Twitter Blue status, exclusivity to two-factor authentication. This important security feature until now has been available for all accounts, however, Twitter users have been receiving notifications that the feature is now only for Twitter Blue subscribers. This means that people who don’t subscribe can be at risk of losing access to Twitter if they don’t remove this feature. I wonder if Twitter will see an increase in Twitter Blue subscribers because of this exclusive security feature.

TikTok Feed Afresh

TikTok is releasing a new option that will let you refresh your algorithmic recommendations, your FYP! So, if you no longer like the videos being recommended to you, you’ll have the option to refresh it, simply go into content preferences in settings and click the refresh you For You feed. Fancy giving it a go? This gives users more freedom, showing how advanced and fast-paced TikTok’s algorithm is.

LinkedIn’s AI-Generated Summaries

LinkedIn is the latest platform to add more AI features, now introducing AI profile summaries and job listings, alongside educational benefits in AI tech in LinkedIn Learning features. This is due to a new GPT tool that will give its users custom suggestions when writing in their profiles. Do you think this is a good thing? Are you worried that everyone’s summaries might start looking impersonal, or even the same? Only time will tell.

UK TikTok Ban On Government Devices

Hitting the news recently, TikTok will be banned on government devices in the UK. This comes after the US has pushed the app to separate from its Chinese ownership, do you think this is a coincidence? The EU carried out this ban last month too, after worries about it being used as a potential spying device. This of course creates concerns that this ban could be carried out to all users, not just those on government devices. What do you think will happen?

You’re all caught up for March! Are you surprised at any? If you’ve enjoyed this blog and want more social media tips and advice, visit our blog page now!

You can make this TikTok as creative as you like, from dancing, or even turning into a little bit of a story, for any of you who love a bit of acting! We did this trend at Gather, click here to give it a watch.

Racking my brain

Got a red flag you’d like to speak about? Or maybe you’ve got an ick? This sound could be the key to showcasing it successfully on TikTok. Best done as a lip sync, with some text providing the all-important context, this can be turned into a viral video in seconds.

Whether you want it to be relatable or shocking, this audio is versatile and has plenty of potential. Here’s an example from Ricotaquito that we love, making a point about people who watch reels over TikToks, we can relate!

Boy Be In My DMs

Have you seen this trend pop up on your FYP? This audio is the perfect sound to use if you’re looking to flaunt or show something off. It’s short and sweet so will require minimum effort to create, you could even do a simple lip sync. Similarly, if you want to show off some self-love this sound would also be a great pairing.

Click here to see Carson Roney’s take on this trend, she even puts a transition into it if you want to make it a bit more complex!

Baby Boy

Has your FYP been inundated with videos of a baby giving a thumbs-up to the camera? This sound is the culprit! Maybe you want to share a guilty pleasure or an embarrassing moment, this audio would be a great option to use.

We’ve done this trend ourselves, sharing a photo of us saying ‘Wanna go for an iced coffee at lunch?’, then added the clip of the baby putting his thumb up at the camera. Take a look at it here. It’s easy, simple and quick to make.

Ready to use some of these sounds? We can’t wait to see what you’ll create. For more TikTok tips, ideas and inspiration, visit ourblogs page!
